Success Stories

Parenting Inside Out has had a meaningful impact on inmates, their children and their families. In many instances, inmates who had never had relationships with their children have learned how to connect with them from prison and after they have released into the community.

The Parenting Inside Out program's influence on inmates lives extends beyond learning good parenting skills. A sound social network is one of the critical pieces to ensuring successful transition to living in the community. Through rebuilding family relationships, inmates set the stage for reentering the community and living positive, pro-social lives.

The video "What About Us?" produced by students from the University of Oregon School of Journalism tells the story of incarcerated mothers and fathers and their success in parenting from behind bars.

Following is the text of a letter received in appreciation of the Parenting Inside Out class and recounts its impact on one participant.

My name is Albert Whitaker, #14595711.

I am a pupil of Mrs. Campbell* at EOCI in Pendleton, Oregon. She runs the PIO class that I am in.

I want to thank the members who support this class and brought it to our institution. I have learned so much from my instructor and our class. The open discussions we have about certain problems that may arise in our families have brought loads of information to me and every one of my classmates.

I am a proud stepfather of six children. I love them with all my heart and want nothing but the best for them. I know now that because of the PIO class I can be the father that they so want and need. I wait for the day when I can utilize all of what this class has taught me, but for now I will use what I can in my letters and the few phone calls I get. I just want to thank all of you for letting me get your knowledge so I can be a better father, husband and person to my family. Thank you.

Albert Whitaker

PS God bless.
